On Sunday the 25th March 2007 the Tai Chi Union of Great Britain (TCUGB) hosted a Festival of Chinese Internal Arts in Wolverhampton, West Midlands. The aim of the event was to allow TCUGB members and others an opportunity to develop and learn new skills and thereby increase their level of experience.
The event was hosted and organised by Faye Yip Li of Deyin Taijiquan Institute GB and Ronnie Robinson, promotions manager TCUGB.
A number of highly experienced TCUGB Instructors were present and each gave a workshop of 45 minutes on various aspects of taiji and other Chinese internal arts.
The event played host to a special delegation from eminent taiji bodies in China including:
Ms Liu Dong: director, Zhengzhou Sports Bureau, chair, Zhengzhou
Wushu Association
Mr Li Wei: secretary-general, Zhengzhou Wushu Association
Ms Fan Xifeng: division chief, Zhengzhou Sports Bureau
Ms Li Fei: deputy secretary-general, Zhengzhou Wushu Association
Mr Liu Yiming: director, Zhengzhou Chang's Wushu Skills and
Techniques Research Institute. The 8th generation heir to Chang's
Wushu skills and techniques
Ms Song Xiaoping: vice-president, Shaolin Shi Tagou martial arts
school
Ms Guo Meihong: vice-president, Shaolin Shi Tagou martial arts
school.
This was the first time a delegation from the Wushu associations of China had supported a TCUGB event in Great Britain. They were very warm and friendly people.
Mr Liu Yiming, director of Zhengzhou Chang's Wushu Skills and Techniques Research Institute and also the 8th generation heir to Chang's Wushu skills and techniques, gave a workshop on one of the three major styles of martial arts in Henan Province.
Ms Li Fei, deputy secretary-general, Zhengzhou Wushu Association and coach of the Zhengzhou Wushu team, gave a workshop on bajiquan. Which included a short routine and applications.
Other workshops included:
A xing yi quan seminar, Peter Warr taught the 5 elements of
Hebei style
Faye Li Yip taught the taiji gong fu fan
Mark Peters taught qin na skills and techniques
Ronnie Robinson concentrated on push hands
Richard Watson and Simon Watson focused on partner drills and
conditioning
Richard Farmer and Altair de Almedia covered healing sounds
qigong and philosophy.
In addition to the workshops the day was concluded with a number of demonstrations. These included a demo from our visitors of Chang style form and double straight sword, bajiquan and the first two sections of the new standardised sword. Other demo's included, Sun Style taijiquan by Peter Warr, a group display of the taiji gong fu fan by Faye and Tary's school, one of Dan Docherty's students performed the spear, and Richard Watson and myself demonstrated the 42 forms combined Taijiquan routine and the two-man sanshou form.
The attendance was good. It is possible this could become an annual event, allowing taiji practitioners to come together and share ideas and friendship. Congratulations to the TCUGB.
