When the world recognises beauty as beauty,

this in its self is not beauty.

When the world recognises good as good,

this in its self is not good.

Indeed, the hidden and the perceived

give birth to each other.

Difficult and easy complement each other.

Long and short exhibit each other

High and Low set the measure for each other.

Silence and sound harmonise each other.

Back and front match each other.

Therefor the Sage manages his affairs without fuss,

And spreads his word without speaking.

He denies nothing of the myriad of things.

He adheres to them, but lays no claim to them.

He follows his labour, but sets no store by it.

He completes a task, but does not dwell upon it.

And because he does not dwell on it nobody

can ever take it away from him.
