Master Wang Seminar

Master Wang was as usual on fantastic form. Our May seminars were packed full of information and his generosity and knowledge are, as always, overwhelming. His martial arts are maturing and reaching new levels, an observation noticed not only by myself. This year he visited both Steve Price and Gill Hughes' clubs in Watford and Milton Keynes. The first weekend was in Glasgow with Derek Daley as our host - a brilliant weekend. Thank you for all your continued support and help in the promotion of the internal arts. We covered the 24 taiji forms and the 32 sword, and continued with the xingyi quan. The main thrust of this seminar was not placed on learning forms, but on the development of internal power and body function and usage.

The weekend seminars in Codicote were a great success and were dedicated once again to the study of bagua zhang. The style is Cheng style, which was created by Master Cheng Ting Hua, a student of Dong Hai Chuan. We revised the basic stepping methods and hand and body postures, after which we spent time reviewing the "Eight Big Palms" and their applications. We also spent time on learning why the stepping methods were particularly beneficial for health. In addition, Master Wang went into great detail concerning the development of internal power generation (fascinating) and some of the more subtle and unique ways bagua uses power. We also covered new ground focusing on Sun Zi Jun's bagua methods with emphasis on both "Single Palm Change" and "Double Palm Change". It is interesting and well worthwhile studying these three inexplicably different martial arts if only to get a small insight into the unique perfume.

Talking with professor Li about internal martial arts last year, he told me the great Sun Lutang said of the three internal family arts xingyi quan is like an "IRON BALL", bagua zhang is like a "WOODEN BALL" and taiji quan is like a "RUBBER BALL". Something to ponder on if you are interested in some of the different feelings and techniques these three arts have to offer.

November will follow the same pattern: Friday evening will cover the xingyi quan and Saturday will be bagua with the emphasis placed on the basics. This will cater for complete beginners or for students who want to refresh and review. Sunday will be for improvers and for those wishing to continue with the more involved techniques and movements.
