Huang Di Nei Jing

The Medical Classic of the Yellow Emperor

This book appears as the conversation between Huang Di, the legendary Yellow Emperor, and a gathering of his ministers and physicians. The discussion is about Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and one can assume it is essential reading for all students and practitioners of TCM. In the text there is mention of four kinds of masters for health preservation.

The Emperor said, "I was told there existed genuine men in ancient times". They mastered the rules of heaven and earth, yin and yang. They inhaled and exhaled the essential qi of nature, they kept their skin taut and the muscles vigorous. They preserved the spirit within, their longevity could compete with that of heaven and earth, so that their lives knew no end. (In short they live!! in, harmony with nature and practiced qigong).

The four masters of health preservation are obvious figments of the author's imagination, perhaps the Zen quotation, "a finger pointing at the moon" would be appropriate.

In future issues we will look at the virtues of the remaining three masters of health preservation supreme man, sage and sagacious man.
